How To Partition Your Mac Hard Drive With Disk Utility

My iMac comes with a 500GB internal Hard drive in one partition. After using it for 3 weeks, I decided to make an additional partition today. Additional partition is very useful when you need to restore your iMac with recovery but didn’t touch on some other folders. Today I decided to partition my HDD to 2, 250GB x 2. Mac OS X has all the built-in tools to help you do that. Check out how can I do that.

  1. Go to Applications folder -> Utilities.
  2. Go to Disk Utility.
  3. Select the 500GB hard drive on the left menubar.
  4. Select Partition on the right top menubar.
  5. Press the small + button.
  6. The second partition will be created with the default name Macintosh HD 2, rename if you wish to.
  7. Change the partition size as you wish. The default format of the partition is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  8. Press the Partition button to confirm.
  9. Check your Finder and you should see the new partition Macintosh HD 2.

Enjoy your new partition in iMac. I have done mine easily. You can restart to refresh the OS.
